In custom FPC manufacturing, small details such as stiffener material and surface finish can have a visible effect on product fit and long-term reliability. These choices should be defined early instead of left to the final drawing review.
Common stiffener choices
- PI stiffener for thin reinforcement and flexible circuit support.
- FR4 stiffener when a stronger component or connector support area is needed.
- Steel or aluminum stiffener for special mechanical requirements.
- Adhesive-backed stiffener when the application requires assembly bonding.
Surface finish considerations
ENIG is often selected for fine-pitch contacts and stable solderability. Other finishes may be suitable depending on cost target, storage period, connector style and assembly method. The drawing should state the finish clearly when the final product has fixed reliability requirements.
What to send for review
For a faster quote, include finished thickness, stiffener area, connector or component position, bend radius and expected use environment. This gives the factory enough information to confirm manufacturability before production.
